Have you ever questioned why some of your top LinkedIn connections achieve remarkable and lasting success on the platform? Or how someone can draw in new professional and business opportunities in such a busy online environment? Here are eight (8) simple steps that promise to elevate your LinkedIn experience.

Whether you've just signed up for LinkedIn or have been observing from the sidelines, you might be asking yourself, "What should I do now?"
To start, it's important to recognize that LinkedIn boasts over 250 million active users, with 40% logging in daily. This represents countless opportunities to connect, learn, share, and delve into your areas of interest, all while staying updated on emerging trends in professional networking.
I became a member of LinkedIn in the summer of 2015 with high hopes. I initially aimed to quickly generate strong leads and secure promising references for my budding consultancy services. However, I soon realized that achieving my objectives on the platform required a much more strategic approach than I had anticipated.
Over the next several months, I dedicated myself to understanding the intricacies of the platform, aiming to define success in this virtual social space and explore how it could lead to business and career opportunities.
I closely observed the engagement strategies of Influencers like Tony Robbins, Richard Branson, Jeff Weiner, Jack Welch, and Dr. Travis Bradberry. During this process, I discovered Brigette Hyacinth, one of LinkedIn's most active members. I noticed several common elements that I believed were the foundation of their high engagement and success on the platform. These insights ultimately proved to be accurate.
I have since distilled these insights into eight simple and highly applicable steps, and the results have been outstanding. However, it's important to note that the goal is not merely to create viral content, which typically attracts large numbers of visitors to your profile. A more valuable measure of success is the conversion rate of those profile views into actual business and professional opportunities.
So here goes.
1. Your Profile Photograph Matters
The significance of having a bright, high-resolution, forward-facing profile photo cannot be underestimated. This often overlooked aspect of our personal branding plays a crucial role in how our profiles stand out to our target audience.
Consider, for instance, a mid-career Public Relations professional based in California, looking for new opportunities in the competitive Digital Tech Industry. Let's call him John. A recruiter conducts a nationwide search for PR professionals with 7 to 10 years of experience in Digital Tech, and John's profile summary appears near the top of the list.
John's profile is clearly optimized for the platform's search engine. However, with hundreds of results returned, the recruiter quickly scans the list and completely overlooks John's inadequate profile picture, positioned between two nearly perfect images.
John's costly mistake serves as a valuable lesson, though it shouldn't lead to panic. Achieving individual success on LinkedIn requires an understanding of and adaptation to the norms of our specific industries and local cultures.
For instance, upon hearing John's story, your initial reaction might be to go all out—buying a new designer outfit and hiring a professional photographer—when your industry might actually favor a more casual approach. It's essential to know the acceptable standards for professional attire in your field.
Equally important as the subject of the profile photo is the background, which should ideally be a plain, light, neutral surface or a well-lit, blurred background with a subtle bokeh effect. Needless to say, the subject (yourself) must always be in sharp focus, especially around the eyes.
Remember, a picture still tells a thousand words.
2. What's Your Headline?
How would you like to be recognized in your industry? This could differ from your current job title. You can aim high with your headline, but be careful not to stray too far from your current professional standing, as this might be seen as deceptive.
3. Update your Personal Statement
This is your Value Proposition, and should be taken very seriously. Take a look at my personal statement, and please feel free to use it as a guide:
I help global brands and organizations achieve greater visibility, brand awareness, community, and lead generation, through the development and implementation of customized Business Communications, Inbound & Outbound Marketing, and Brand Development strategies.
A successful Personal Statement hinges on recognizing your actions and the skill set(s) or distinctive approach that enable you to perform effectively. Your statement should clearly emphasize your market, the value you offer to it, and a summary of your method—detailing the "How" of your value proposition.
4. Update all Fields in Your Profile
A comprehensive profile provides your audience—such as recruiters, potential future employers, and business partners—with a clearer understanding of who you are and what you bring to the table. It also enhances your likelihood of appearing in more LinkedIn search results, as having more content increases the chances of including the right keywords.
5. Network within your Field(s) of Interest
Begin utilizing LinkedIn's 'Search' feature to locate professionals in your areas of interest. Concentrate on individuals associated with brands or organizations you respect and admire, and who are based in cities or regions that interest you. Feel free to invite influential people in your field to connect. This marks your first significant step in networking on LinkedIn.
6. Start Engaging Your Network
You might observe that professionals and experts with similar interests, including those you may already know, are frequently sharing content. Leave insightful comments and share their posts when you find them valuable. Additionally, send them a message to express that their message resonated with you, and let the conversation evolve naturally without forcing it. It's crucial to be genuine in your interactions and avoid asking for anything too soon. You'll be surprised at how naturally favors and opportunities emerge from consistent, sincere engagement.
7. Start Posting Original Content
This is far more crucial than most people realize. Share content that enhances your network and clearly represents who you are and what you do. Analyze successful strategies on LinkedIn and take detailed notes.
LinkedIn prioritizes engaging, original content in a variety of formats—videos, inspirational posts, informational posts, educational posts, articles, and more. If you aim to reach a wide audience in your industry or market, identify which formats align best with your industry and personal brand, and start developing your content. Meanwhile, keep sharing and commenting on any valuable material available in your network.
8. Regularly Update Your Profile
Consider your profile as an evolving document. Continuously update it to include the appropriate 'keywords' for your industry and market. It's crucial to understand that the keywords for Corporate Communications in New York may differ from those in London, Accra, or Nairobi.
LinkedIn functions as a search engine, and the better optimized your profile is for your industry, the more likely it is to attract views from recruiters, potential employers, or business partners. Acquaint yourself with the relevant keywords for your industry and market, and make sure to update your profile and 'Skills' section accordingly.
By following these suggestions, you should be well on your way to a more successful networking experience on LinkedIn.
